Pet Balaclava - Free Crochet Pattern

Pet Balaclava – Free Crochet Pattern

Introduction

Dress your pets up in style, or make this to keep their ears warm! This pattern is beginner friendly and made from 7 granny squares. I made this for a yorkie russell, a small dog, and it fit her with some extra room for comfort. I also tried it out on my pug who has a bigger head and it fit her perfectly, just make sure to try it out on your pet as you go along, and size up or down accordingly. You might need to add some extra granny squares for larger breeds.

Materials

  • Yarn: 4 yarn colours, medium weight. I used Bonus DK

  • Hook: 4mm

  • Scissors

  • Yarn needle

Stitches & Abbreviations (US terms)

ch – chain

sc – single crochet

hdc- half double crochet

dc – double crochet

ss – slip stitch

Pattern

R1: Make a magic circle, or 4 chains and ss into 1st ch to form a circle. Ch3, dc, ch2, *2dc, ch2* 3 times. Ss into top of beginning ch3, fasten off.

R2: Switch to 2nd colour, join into a ch2sp. (Ch3, 2dc, ch2, 3dc) into the ch2sp *(3dc, ch2, 3dc) into next ch2sp* 3 times. Ss into top of beginning ch3, fasten off.

R3: Switch to 1st colour, join into a ch2sp. (Ch3, 2dc, ch2, 3dc) into ch2sp. 3dc into next sp. *(3dc, ch2, 3dc) into ch2sp, 3dc into next sp* 3 times. Ss into top of beginning ch3, fasten off.

At this point, you can choose to add the 4th row and sew them together at the end, or join them with the join as you go method I do further on.

Repeat until you have 8 granny squares.

R4: Only do this with one square to start. Switch to 2nd colour, join into a ch2sp. (Ch3, 2dc, ch2, 3dc) into ch2sp. 3dc in next 3 spaces. *(3dc, ch2, 3dc) into ch2sp, 3dc in next 3 spaces* 3 times. Ss into top of beginning ch3, fasten off.

Joining the Squares

Add 3 sides of the 4th row to your next granny square as follows; attach yarn into ch2sp. (Ch3, 2dc) in ch2sp, 3dc in next 2 spaces. *(3dc, ch2, 3dc) in ch2sp, 3dc in next 2 spaces* 2 times. (3dc, ch1) in next ch2sp.

Next, grab your first completed square (A) and line it up with the unfinished side of your current square (B). Ss into a corner space in A, (ch1, 3dc) into corner space of B. *Ss into next sp in A, 3dc into next sp in B* 2 times. Ss into next sp in A, (3dc, ch1) into next ch2sp in B, ss into ch2sp in A, ch1, attach to beginning ch3 in B. Fasten off.

Attach 4 squares together in this way until they form a closed square. The final square will need to be attached with every 2nd side on the final row.

Next, add 3 more squares on top of those in the same way. Note: if you are at a corner space with two attaching granny squares, slip stitch into both corner spaces of those before continuing to work on your current one.

Then, add the top granny square.

Edges

Insert your yarn into one of the corners of the face. Single crochet into every stitch around the square, 2sc into every ch2sp. If you want to make it more fitting, you can do a second row with a dec sc into every 2nd and 3rd stitch.

Insert your yarn into one of the stitches on the bottom. Sc into every stitch. Sl st to join. Ch2, hdc into every stitch. Sl st to join, fasten off.

And you're done, enjoy!
