  • Hook: 4.5mm

  • Scissors

  • Yarn needle

  • Measuring tape

Stitches & Abbreviations

ch : chain

sc: single crochet

dc:  double crochet

dc inc: double crochet increase

ss: slip stitch

(US terms)

Pattern Notes

This pattern can be easily altered to your size by measuring from shoulder to shoulder and chaining to that length for the back panel. As everything else is worked onto this, you can try it on as you go along to make sure it fits. Just make sure that your chain is an even number.

I'm a medium, or UK 10-12 so you can work around that as needed!

Turning ch2s are not included in stitch count at end of rows, except for R4.

For the increases on the front panels, make sure you are increasing at the centre of the cardigan.

Back Panel

Ch 68. First dc of R1 goes into 3rd ch from the hook.

R1-3: dc to the end of the row (66)

R4: ch4, skip a stitch and dc into next, *ch2, skip a stitch, dc* to end (33)

R5: *dc into top of dc, dc into ch2sp* to end (66)

R6-7: Repeat R1

R8: Repeat R4

R9: Repeat R5

Repeat R6-9 6 more times

Repeat R1-2 once more, making a total of 35 rows.

Front Panels

Continuing on from the back panel. Ch2 to start every row

R1-3: 15dc (15)

R4: ch4, skip a stitch, dc into next, *ch2, skip a stitch, dc* to end of row (8)

R5: *dc into top of dc, dc into ch2sp* to 2nd last st, 1dc inc (16)

R6: 2dc inc, dc to end of row (18)

R7: dc to 2nd last st, 1dc inc (19)

R8: ch4, skip a stitch, dc into next, *ch2, skip a stitch, dc* to end of row (9) For uneven rows, skip 2 stitches at the end of row before dc into last stitch

Repeat rounds 5-8 another 2 times. Last increase row should have 27 stitches.

R17-19: dc to end of row (27)

R20: ch4, skip a stitch, dc into next, *ch2, skip a stitch, dc* to end of row (15)

Repeat rows 17-20 three more times

Repeat rows 17- 19 once more to make a total of 35 rows. Fasten off.

Attach yarn to other side and repeat the same to have two matching front panels.

Sewing

Sew the sides up to the 5th row of chain spaces/ the 20th row.

Sleeves

R1: Attach yarn into the sleeve space. Place 2dc into the side of every dc and 2dc in every ch2sp, ss into top of ch2 to close (64)

R2-3: dc to end of row, ss to close (64)

R4: ch4, skip a stitch, dc, *ch2, skip a stitch, dc*, ss to close (33)

R5:  *dc into top of dc, dc into ch2sp* to end of row, ss to close (64)

Repeat rows 2 to 5 another time, placing one dc decrease in rows 2, 3 and 5 towards the bottom of the sleeve (61)

Repeat row 2 again, placing one dc decrease towards the bottom of the sleeve (60)

R11: sc to end of row (60)

Repeat the same for the second sleeve.

Border

Insert your yarn into any stitch along the edge.

R1: Ch2, hdc all around, ss to close. For both corners in front at the bottom, place (hdc, ch2, hdc) to create corners. For the sides where you can't see the stitches, place 2hdc in the side of every dc and 2hdc in every ch2 space.

R2: ch2, hdc all around, ss to close. Place (hdc, ch2, hdc) in ch2 spaces from previous round.

R3: ch1, sc all around, ss to close. Place (sc, ch2, sc) in ch2 spaces from previous round. Fasten off.

At this point, I blocked my work so I could see where I wanted the ties to go.

Ties

Ch55, fasten off. Tie a knot on either side to secure your chain and cut off the ends.

Repeat twice so that you have 3 chains in total.

Attaching the Ties

There are multiple different ways to attach your ties, you can sew them onto one side or even make 2 shorter chains to sew onto each side. You could even use buttons if you would prefer.

For this cardigan, I just pushed my ties through a space next to the 1st, 3rd and 5th rows of ch2 spaces from the bottom. This way, the chains are left hanging from one side until you put the cardigan on and you can tie them up.
